Calgary, Alta. – The Western Hockey League announced today that Edmonton Oil Kings forward Jalen Luypen has been named WHL Player of the Week presented by Journie Rewards for the week ending March 7, 2021.
Luypen, 18, helped boost the Oil Kings to a third consecutive victory on Friday night, striking for a short-handed goal that stood up to be the game-winning tally in a 4-2 win over the Medicine Hat Tigers at the Downtown Community Arena in Edmonton. Luypen’s second goal of the season came midway through the third period, breaking a 2-2 deadlock. In addition to the short-handed goal, Luypen added a primary assist on Liam Keeler’s first period power-play goal, which opened the scoring.

Edmonton, AB – The Edmonton Oil Kings announced today the team’s leadership group ahead of the 2020-21 Western Hockey League season.
Forward Scott Atkinson (Vancouver, BC) will serve as the team’s captain for a second consecutive year, joining Mark Pysyk (2010-2012) and Griffin Reinhart (2012-2014) as the only multi-year captains in franchise history.
Atkinson, 20, is entering his fourth and final season in the WHL, having spent his entire career with the Oil Kings after being drafted in the fifth-round (98th overall) of the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft. In 175 career games played, he has amassed 30 goals and 40 assists. He was named the team’s Kristians Pelss Award winner following the 2018-19 season, given to the player who best exemplifies what it means to be an Edmonton Oil King on and off the ice. He is the 13th captain in modern franchise history.
When it comes to the Western Hockey League restarting its season for its East Division, things are a little confusing right now.
There have been reports of a possible WHL East Division bubble in Regina, and reports of that not being the case. We do not know if the division will operate in a bubble or not, but there are a lot of other questions like: How will the players be housed or billeted? And how will game day operations work?
Meanwhile, Alberta teams already received approval last week on Jan. 28 and have at least started to wrap their heads around what the WHL season will look.
