Dollar General store coming to Bishop after historic annexation
“We need something like the Dollar General,” Bishop Mayor Johnny Pritchett said.
The council voted to annex almost 30 acres into the town, which since its inception had been a 0.8-square-mile municipality.
The annexation, according to the mayor, will add to the tax base and create more financial opportunities for the town, especially when the remainder of the site is developed in the future.
The petition for the annexation and a zoning change was made by Ezekiel Lambert III of Madison for the registered owner, Reids Ferry LLC of Morgan County.
The proposed Dollar General will be located on about two acres and face Georgia Highway 186 (High Shoals Road) near its intersection with U.S. Highway 441. The site is near where a new Golden Pantry will be built after the previous store burned last April.
Upon entry, customers will immediately find the pharmacy to their right and just to the left, a grocery section with fresh vegetables, fruits, and meat.
The option for fresh foods is one unique downtown feature, as this store will now be one of the only in the area for downtown residents to get their fresh food within walking distance.
Just past the grocery section are home goods with cleaning supplies, decor, and other odds and ends. The apparel section has necessities like socks and underwear and in the back of the store is even an electronic section.
“I just hope everybody will come by and visit. I think they’ll all find it very exciting,” said Stamm.
