A master plan presented to the Athens-Clarke County commission on Tuesday shows the local initiative to increase affordable housing in the north downtown area.
During a meeting Tuesday evening, commissioners voted unanimously to approve the master plan, which would be funded with $39 million from the Affordable Housing Project included in the SPLOST 2020 program.
The project area is referred to as the “North Downtown area” which encompasses the current Bethel Midtown Village, College & Hoyt community, and surrounding land.
Redevelopment of the area will take several years to accomplish with the ultimate goal of revitalizing the area and providing more affordable housing to Athens residents.
