[gun shots]. sounds like gun shots. that shooting is the latest example in a surge of violent crime that minneapolis has seen. murders are up to 113% compared to a year ago. overall, crime is up 50%. some are blaming the city council which pledged to dismantle the police department. m.p.d. is down 200 officers from a year ago due to a wave of early retirements after the unrest last summer. mayor frye is asking state and federal law enforcement to send help while the city council continues to push to dismantle the police department arguing that funding various social programs would do more to stop the violence than hiring additional officers. today on the anniversary of george floyd s death, the celebration of life event downtown are celebrating small steps that have been made the past year but continuing to call
screen for people to look at. but you consider in minneapolis, 171% increase in the number of children shot last year. 19 children shot minneapolis this year. there are other staggering increase homicides across the country as well. we talk again about accountability but what about accountability in the communities? it is interesting that you bring that up. very rarely do we talk about the victims, do we talk about the families were the people that live in vulnerable communities. it s not about them. so these few, these few people that speak aloud to, repulsive voices, they don t care about the people who live in the cities. let me tell you come in detroit, the people in detroit who live in the neighborhoods don t wanto defund. they support this police department. look at new york, for example, with a significant increase in attrition.
