Famed U.S. architect Ernest Flagg left his mark on Todt Hill from his Colonial-revival Flagg estate at 209 Flagg Place to more modest homes and cottages along the east shore. Ernest Flagg was born in Brooklyn in 1857, studied architecture at Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and took on some notable projects early in his career. One was the classic Singer Building and Tower, which was the world’s tallest building, at 612 feet, in 1908 at 149 Broadway and Liberty Street in downtown Manhattan.
