In 2017 then San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee proudly announced, after the opening of Hilltop Park in the Bayview, that San Francisco is the first city in the nation to have every resident live within a 10-minute walk of a park or open space.
“In San Francisco, we want everyone to enjoy the prosperity of this city, which is why it is particularly meaningful that we have a local parks system that is accessible and enjoyable for all of our residents,” Lee said.
Parks have always played an important part in our city s history, from the day after the earthquake in 1906 when Golden Gate Park became a site of refuge for 20,000 unhoused San Franciscans, to Jimi Hendrix leading the cultural revolution that changed the world in the Summer of Love on the Panhandle.
