JOHANNESBURG - The Basic Education Department s decision to cancel the mid-year exams for matric pupils has left some organisation s in the sector divided.
The department confirmed that it would be scrapping the grade 12 June exams to allow more time to cover the curriculum.
Naptosa s Basil Manuel welcomed the move, saying that pupils must remain in class for as long as possible to catch up with the syllabus.

The basic education department announced, on Wednesday, that the time usually dedicated to the matric june exams will be used to catch up on the 2021 curriculum instead.
Grade 12 learners across South Africa will not be writing examinations in June, the Department of Basic Education announced on Wednesday, 2 June. This is in order to make up the learning time lost by matric students due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga told the portfolio committee that the department wants to keep matric learners in classrooms for as long as possible because of the impact of the pandemic on teaching and learning.

Pretoria - Student bodies, teacher unions, education activists and school governing bodies have collectively condemned an incident in which a teacher was allegedly attacked and stabbed by a fellow educator at a North West school.
The education structures have also called on the Department of Education to prioritise security and access control at school premises.
The 64-year-old teacher from Tolamo Primary School at Letlhakaneng village near Brits allegedly attacked and stabbed a 47-year-old female educator at Tshefoge Primary School on Monday.
The teacher, who was allegedly stabbed multiple times on her neck and back, is in a critical condition at a North West hospital.
Cosas vows to challenge early opening for private schools in court News24 Wire

The Congress of South African Students (Cosas) says a decision for independent schools to be allowed to open their doors from 1 February, two weeks before public schools is arrogant and furthers inequality in the country.
The student body has vowed to challenge the decision in the court.
It has also vowed to shutdown all schools which opened before 1 February, adding it believed the facilities were driven by profit and not concerned about the health of pupils.
