ONEONTA, NY – The City of Oneonta has named Police Lt. Christopher Witzenburg as interim chief of the Oneonta Police Department.
The move was approved unanimously during Tuesday’s Common Council meeting.
Witzenburg replaces Chief Douglas Brenner, who announced his retirement earlier this month. Brenner had been a member of the Oneonta Police Department for 15 years, the last four as chief.
The city will schedule a Civil Service exam for some time in March to come up with a list of candidates for the position. The common council will then interview the candidates before making a final decision on the City of Oneonta’s next police chief.
When the Oneonta Common Council meets on Tuesday they will vote on naming Police Lt. Christopher Witzenburg as interim chief of the Oneonta Police Department. Last month Chief Douglas Brenner announced his retirement after four year as the department s Chief, although he had been on the force for a total of 15 years. He retires at the age of 56.
According to AllOTSEGO, the city will begin the process of selecting Brenner’s permanent successor next month and the City Council will select that person from the list of candidates.
