Madison County Sheriff s Office seeks nearly $400,000 for upcoming budget

WBBJ TV May 6, 2021 JACKSON, Tenn. The sheriff’s department unveiled their budget for next year. As part of the budget meetings for Madison County, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office made their pitch Thursday. The sheriff’s office is asking for nearly $400,000 to hire 11 more employees, including four patrol officers and two more investigators. “It’s hard for us to compete with industry and get the salaries up that industry is paying. We can’t compete with the benefits,” said Sheriff John Mehr. Last year, the sheriff’s department sued the county, asking for more deputies and a pay increase.

WBBJ TV May 4, 2021 JACKSON, Tenn. Tuesday, the Madison County budget committee worked to tie up loose ends of the budget for the upcoming year. “Basically what we’re doing is we’re getting some money from the state. We thought originally it was going to be like 1.2 million, but they voted last week at the state to send us $698,000,” said Madison County budget chairman Doug Stephenson. Stephenson says this means they now how clarification on where some money can go. “We want to use it wisely. Do we want to use it for a capital project? Do we want to use it for, whatever. We just don’t want to squander it away,” he said.

Discussions over the Madison County budget continue

WBBJ TV April 16, 2021 JACKSON, Tenn. Madison County budget committee is continuing discussions with county departments on finances. The remaining Madison County Departments met with the budget committee Friday morning to go over their budget proposals. “We were finishing up our budget hearings. We had several of the smaller departments come. The election commission, the trustee,” said Doug Stephenson, Budget Committee Chairman. Stephenson says the committee had to rearrange several budget items due to the pandemic. And now they have to change it back. “We’re trying to get that under control. Then we’ll be accumulating all of these numbers together, revenue and expenditures, to sort of see where we are and what cuts or what we need to do,” Stephenson said.
