The first-degree murder trial of Donthe Lucas is set to resume Wednesday following a two-week break prompted by COVID-19 exposure in a Pueblo courtroom.
Lucas, 28, is accused of killing his then-girlfriend, Kelsie Schelling, who disappeared in Pueblo Feb. 4, 2013, after traveling to meet Lucas. Schelling was 21 years old and about 8 weeks pregnant at the time.
Trial proceedings were five days underway on Feb. 9, when 10th Judicial District Court Judge Thomas Flesher called for a two-week recess, saying someone in the courtroom tested positive for COVID-19.
The 14-day quarantine was recommended to the court by the Pueblo Department of Public Health and Environment.

For more than eight years, people in Pueblo have pondered a macabre question: What possibly could have happened to Kelsie Schelling?
The 21-year-old Denver woman, who was eight weeks pregnant at the time, disappeared in Pueblo on Feb. 4, 2013, after a late-night drive to the Home of Heroes to visit her boyfriend, Donthe Lucas.
Schelling has not been seen or heard from since, and her remains have never been found.
But the question of what happened to Schelling, as well as who could have orchestrated her disappearance, recently came one step closer to being answered – at least in terms of Lucas’ involvement.
Doubt cast on late texts allegedly sent by Kelsie Schelling
PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) Day five of the homicide trial for Donthe Lucas included testimonies from Kelsie Schelling s work supervisor, her father, and a woman who says she s in love with Lucas.
Lucas is accused of first-degree murder after the 2013 disappearance of Schelling.
Savannah Martin was Schelling s work supervisor at Floor Decor in the Denver area. In her testimony, Martin described her relationship with Schelling, saying she considered her a friend.
According to Martin, she wasn t aware that Schelling had gone to Pueblo the night before. On Feb. 5, Schelling sent Martin texts saying she was really sick and went to the ER.
It’s been just shy of eight years since pregnant, 21-year-old Kelsie Schelling disappeared in Pueblo after driving from her home in Denver to visit her boyfriend and purported father of her unborn child, Donthe Lucas.
Members of Schelling’s family made a similar drive down Interstate 25 to see Lucas Wednesday as he stood trial for Schelling’s murder.
Schelling’s mother, Laura Saxton, has awaited this day for years she’s long alleged that Lucas was either involved in or responsible for her daughter’s disappearance. She and Schelling’s father, Doug Schelling, even filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Lucas and members of his family in 2016 that was later dismissed.
