A common sight in the windows of American kitchens during World War II was a simple red and white flag sporting a blue star for each member of the household who had been called away to serve. Tragically, a gold star on that simple flag meant that a family member would not be returning home safely to their loved ones.
There were 146 gold stars displayed in Crawford County windows.

Our faith teaches us that in our suffering God is with us, Iowa State Patrol Col. Nathan Fulk said during the service. Jim s priorities were faith, family and his commitment to public service in his community. We re hurting but we re not broken. We are struggling but we re not lost. We re deeply saddened but we will work to find peace in the days ahead.
