Thousands of people are expected this weekend at the Salon international de la femme noire, in Montreal s Old Port. The event, which will focus on the environment and social justice, aims to put forward the voice of Black women and contribute to the economic prosperity of their businesses.

Mitch Garber and Dorothy Rhau’s respective backgrounds and journeys are different, although they are both products of Montreal. Garber is a business leader, philanthropist and all-around mensch. Rhau, a force to be reckoned with, is a former comedian and the founder and CEO of the Salon International De La Femme Noire.
Among the things they have in common, however, is that they have made family a priority, and this is greatly responsible for who they have become. What also stood out, as I interviewed them separately as guest host of the Alcove moments podcast, is how grateful they both are. Both maintain an acute sense of wonderment, though no one could have really faulted them had they become blasé. Experience sometimes does that. Instead, each still finds pleasure in the little things, making thankfulness an implicit practice.
