(RNS) If you think it’s a coincidence that two accusatory letters from Russell Moore were leaked just before the Southern Baptist Convention convenes in Nashville, Tennessee, next week, I’ve got a big granite mountain east of Atlanta to sell you.
The main business of the annual meeting will be to elect a new SBC president to follow J.D. Greear, who, because the 2020 meeting was canceled due to COVID-19, has served two one-year terms.

Book of Reports has reignited a public dispute between Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and its former president Paige Patterson.
Both sides cite the dispute as a test of the convention’s commitment to truth and a harbinger of its future direction.

Book of Reports, which presents information for messengers attending the denomination’s upcoming annual meeting, alleges Patterson misappropriated “confidential donor information” and took seminary property after his 2018 termination over allegations of mishandling sexual abuse.
The report comes three months after the seminary settled a lawsuit against a foundation that shifted millions in funding following Patterson’s departure.

FORT WORTH (BP) Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary used its annual report to the Southern Baptist Convention to assert former President Paige Patterson “improperly removed” documents and other items that belong to the seminary after his firing in 2018.
In an interview with Baptist Press, Patterson denied the allegations the seminary made in the 2021 SBC Book of Reports. He also denied he and others have a to divert donations away from the seminary to the Sandy Creek Foundation, his personal nonprofit organization.
In a statement to Baptist Press, Adam W. Greenway, who succeeded Patterson as Southwestern’s president, asserted: “Southwestern Seminary has told the truth.”
