Suggestions to register beach parking online: Simplified signage to be installed at the shorelines

Morning breaking over Silver Beach. (Credit: Ambrose Clancy) The Shoreline Access Task Force heard mostly compliments at both its Tuesday morning meeting and a followup that afternoon with the Town Board. It’s certain that no overall plan to control access to beaches for residents, visitors and day-trippers will please everyone, but efforts are being made to ensure everyone has some access to the water, whether or not they have permits. Another step that won applause was Chairman Peter Vielbig’s proposal to use a service capable of delivering permits at sites for those who need day passes. An electronic system, “Pavemint,” enables drivers to enter the site where they want to use a permit on their cellphones and then enter credit card information to receive a permit. Access to shoreline restrictions under fire - Shelter Island Reporter

Access to shoreline restrictions under fire Early morning at Bootleggers Alley. (Credit: Martin Burke) Don’t blame the Shoreline Access Committee; blame the mandate with which it was charged, resulting in recommendations that no one seems to like, all involved agreed. Problems at Bootleggers Alley last summer focused the Town Board on the effort to look at all shoreline access points with an eye to controlling uses. Two major issues emerged for the Shoreline Access task force: parking and signage. Neither, it appears, will satisfy needs at Bootleggers, where crowds of nonresidents fished and camped last summer, using the dunes as toilets. Residents complained they left garbage in the area and often infringed on private properties. Temporary installation of a Port-A-Potty did little to alleviate the problems.

Election season opens on Shelter Island: Hats in the ring by political newcomers

Three announcements in a week signaled that the local political season is suddenly upon us. Councilman Albert Dickson, a Democrat, told his colleagues and the public at the March 2 Town Board work session that he won’t seek a second term. The two major Island political parties soon after announced the candidacies of newcomers to politics who will challenge for a seats on the Town Board. The Shelter Island Democratic Committee is putting up Brett Surerus for election to the board, and the Shelter Island Republican Committee announced that Margaret (Meg) Larsen is its choice in November’s election. Councilwoman Amber Brach-Williams, a Republican who also serves as deputy town supervisor, is up for re-election this November, but the Democrats will only endorse Mr. Surerus for the board, said Democratic Party Chairwoman Heather Reylek.
