Microbes in Cow Stomachs Can Help Recycle Plastic – Advanced BioFuels USA

by Nicoletta Lanese (Live Science) Microbes fished from the stomachs of cows can gobble up certain kinds of plastic, including the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) used in soda bottles, food packaging and synthetic fabrics. Scientists uncovered these microbes in liquid that was drawn from the rumen, the largest compartment of a ruminant’s  stomach; ruminants include hooved animals like cattle and sheep, which rely on microorganisms to help break down their diet of coarse vegetation. The rumen acts as an incubator for these microbes, which either digest or ferment foods consumed by a cow or other ruminant, according to the  University of Minnesota. The researchers suspected that some microbes lurking in a cow’s rumen should be capable of digesting polyesters, substances whose component molecules are linked by so-called ester groups.

Research - Some bacteria in cow stomachs could break down plastic

Research - Some bacteria in cow stomachs could break down plastic 05 July 2021 According to a study, the plastic could be degraded thanks to certain bacteria present in the rumen of cattle, reports The Guardian and reported on the French website Le Point.      While plastic pollution continues to cause concern around the world, this discovery could give a glimmer of hope. According to a study led by Dr Doris Ribitsch of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna, bacteria in the stomachs of cattle could break down plastic, reports The Guardian. These results are far from trivial, when we know that more than eight billion tons of plastic have been accumulated since the 1950s on the planet.
