Working to get DFL message out in Lyon Co | News, Sports, Jobs

dgau@marshallindependent.com Photo by Deb Gau Lyon County DFL Treasurer Tim Buysse gave a report on the party unit’s finances and 2021 fundraising goals during the county convention, held Monday night at Southwest Minnesota State University. MARSHALL It’s going to take a lot of work, they said. But members of the Lyon County Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party said there was still a chance to grow the party in the next election cycle. At the county DFL convention Monday night, party members talked about both the challenges of the 2020 and strategy for the future. “I feel we did a really great job of messaging this past cycle,” said Doria Drost, who ran for Minnesota House of Representatives in District 16A last year. While she and other area Democratic candidates did not win in state races, Drost said they did make some headway. Drost said some voters told her they did not vote a straight Republican ticket in 2020.

LGBTQ+: Not a lifestyle nor religion | News, Sports, Jobs

May 5, 2021 There was a letter written in response to the one I recently submitted regarding the lawsuit against MPS. The response letter referenced the idea of LGBTQ+ as a ‘lifestyle’ and saying no lifestyles or religions should be promoted in a school above other ones. It also mentioned that Christian flags were denied to be flown at the school in various settings. I would like to take the time to respond to this letter as I feel it is reflecting a rather misled mindset. First, LGBTQ+ is not a lifestyle. It is not a choice that folks can simply turn on and off- therefore, MPS is not promoting one ‘lifestyle’ over another. If you are struggling with this concept, here is a really good article written by somebody that is LGBTQ+: http://indepthnh.org/2017/05/14/its-not-a-lifestyle-so-just-get-over-it/

Promote Acceptance, Not Division | News, Sports, Jobs

To the editor: There have been recent actions taken against the Marshall School District and the Marshall Middle School principal for allowing visibility of the LGBTQ+ flag on campus. Those against the flag claim it is discriminating against their beliefs and isolates those that are not a part of the LGBTQ+ community. The LGBTQ+ community and all minority groups for that matter have been continually belittled, pushed to the margins of society, and silenced because their voice doesn’t match the roaring of the white majority. If there is anything that we have learned over the past few years, it is that forcing silence and refusing to open our minds and hearts to others is the real problem with our community. It is the reason that people do not feel safe in schools and in public. It is the reason that youth suicide rates are at all-time highs. It is the reason that children would rather suffer alone that to go to a trusted adult about the issues in their lives.
