ANC joins the global progresive community in celebration of International Women s Day

International Women's Day is a global day that celebrates women's achievements while also taking stock of challenges women continue to confront. On this day we also reflect on the outstanding contributions of leaders like Charlotte Maanya-Maxeke, Lillian Ngoyi, Josi Mpama, Ray Alexander and Dora Tamana who became significant liberation voices through participation in international campaigns of socialist and liberation movements. The inaugural International Women's Day was observed on 19 March 1911. On this day over a million women and men gathered in rallies as they demanded women’s right to vote, hold public office, right to work and an end to discrimination in the work place. The United Nations recognised International Women’s Day in 1977 though it largely emerged from struggles and activities of labour movements at the turn of the twentieth century.

The theme of the SACP centenary, PUT PEOPLE BEFORE PROFIT: SOCIALISM IS THE FUTURE—BUILD IT NOW, aptly reflects our strategic tasks regarding gender equality.
