wild weather moved into the boston area last night with lightning bolts crackling through the skies over fenway park and the rest of the city. and a tornado touched down near grand rapids, michigan. 100-mile-an-hour winds ripped the roof off a strip mall, damaged about 50 homes and knocked out power to thousands. abc s linsey davis has the story. [ siren sounding ] reporter: no rest for the weather weary. watch as this tornado thrashes across an iowa field as another round of severe weather invades the state. like a whole tree up there. reporter: even the storm chaser who captured the twister admits he was caught off-guard. if i hadn t been there and seen it with my own eyes, i would have thought it would have been a fairly strange event because the storms weren t. expected to be that large. reporter: 13 reported tornados in central iowa like the one that literally turned mary neilson s life upside down in a matter of seconds. i said, dear god, don t don t trap me down he
in a matter of seconds. i said, dear god, don t don t trap me down here. i got three beautiful grandkids. reporter: in north dakota, hail and wind strong enough to flatten this trailer. an ef-1 tornado packing winds of 110 miles an hour in western michigan mangled homes and brought down trees. sounded like a freight train. and whipping winds, stuff flying around. reporter: up and down the mississippi, cones of caution. they re bracing for more rain. flooding already forcing the closure of several roads and bridges. utah and california could use more rain to battle blazes. outside of san francisco, more than 6,000 acres have already burned. linsey davis, abc news, new york. all right, linsey davis, we appreciate it. here is a look at your weather. watch out for severe storms from the lower great lakes to the ohio valley. and moving later into the day, again into the northeast, new england. there will also be thunderstorms in the southwest and showers along the gulf coast.
