the houses that don t have basements. i think about you know, there s a lot of mobile homes. i think about the individual housing that may not have been as sturdy to withstand something like this. my dad lives on a street called oak heights. and i ve heard from a few people over that way that the tornado apparently went through that street. which is one of the most residential parts of the town. and so, you know, who knows, who knows what they re waking up to this morning. and what those houses are going to look like. you know, it s obviously wintertime now, most of think about these houses without roofs and they re unlivable, i m thinking about where all of these people are going to go for the next several weeks or months while the homes rebuild. it s still stuck with me, lori, that you guys found a huge being of wood that speared through the master bedroom.
in the afternoon. i mean, there s not much else you could do. i know in these situations, especially with kids and the injuries and fatalities at the school, you just want to assign blame somehow. but i think everything was done properly. you know, so people evacuate order did they go to their base snmt we saw streets and streets destroyed and not everyone who lived in these homes perished. a lot of places in this area don t have basements. a lot of places in the east have basements but they don t. either a storm shelter or go to a friend s storm shelter. that s what they were dealing with. you know, usually you tell people to stay in place. but at one point, once we knew how bad this was, all the helicopter pilots and the chief meteorologist at the nbc station were telling people, if you can t get underground, run, get on a bike, get in a car, go. usually we don t tell people to do that because we don t want the roads congested. but that s what we were dealing with out there.
big storms. yeah, you know, this will probably go down as the most tornadoes of any month ever. april typically has around 100 tornadoes. the report as of a couple of hours ago is we re up to 808 tornadoes this month. so you re absolutely right. the most active month and may is the most active month typically so hopefully that will change but when you get stuck in a pattern like we re stuck in, sometimes you see repeats of this which is what we ve seen so far. hopefully that won t continue to be the case but there aren t any big indications that this will change, this pattern. i just feel bad for people who don t have basements. if you don t have a basement, and you know that tornado is bearing down on you, what do you do? well, you know, you get to the inner most room that you can. but if you look right here at these places, that didn t matter with the tornado like this. so if you don t get to a basement, if you don t get to a sound structure, the only good
absolutely. people in mississippi and areas around want to hear you say this is over. well, it is going to be over today. the frontal boun doer that we saw a lot of these storms gone, has pushed much farther from the east. a much better weather day today. yesterday, it was a horrible situation. one thing, brook, we like to tell our viewers is that one of the issues you have in a place like yazoo city, the water table tends to be very high. you don t have to dig down deep to run into very moist earth. the safest place to be during times of a strong tornado is underground. many people in this part of the world don t have basements. they don t have storm cellars. it is hard to find shelter. for a storm to come right on through, you heard the gentlemen moments ago, describe it like being a jingiant lawnmower. the water mains, you see broken
