Local cake shop hangs up its aprons (Niamh Downes Surbiton High)

After over 10 years of running, Wimbledon’s ‘Cakeology’ is closing down.  In the months following the sale of their store to a new landlord in December of 2020, an impossible 50% increase in rent was demanded, the ultimatum being to vacate the store. Since then, owner Laura George and her team made the hard decision to close up shop, giving employees time to find new work and prepare for closure. Following this saddening news, I spoke to Laura about the beloved business and the events surrounding its shut down.  In December 2020 our shop was sold, just as our lease was up for renewal,’ Laura began. ‘This new landlord came in with bad intentions. He allowed us to extend our lease for 6 months. We were led to believe it was because he wanted to help but it was actually so he had time to apply for planning permission to convert the store to new flats. Covid-19: Dons Local Action Group to mark one year together

Dons Local Action Group set to celebrate anniversary Dons Local Action Group will celebrate one-year since it s launch with a virtual event at Plough Lane. Set up by AFC Wimbledon fans at the beginning of the pandemic, the volunteer group grew rapidly and were joined by hundreds of fans and non-fans alike. The coronavirus response group have provided food, technology and other support to those in need across Merton, Wandsworth and Kingston and now focuses on the battle against poverty. In the past 12 months, volunteers have distributed over 150,000 food parcels and over 1,700 devices to those in need. DLAG Now, the volunteer team will look back on their one year together live from the AFC Wimbledon Stadium at Plough Lane.

Wimbledon Labour Party donate to Dons Local Action Group Dons Local Action Group has received thousands of pounds to help bridge the gap between the digital divide. Wimbledon Labour Party recently donated £5000 to help children who are technologically poor within the Wimbledon area. The donation has since been used to buy several chrome books for children in need. It comes as Dons Local continue to deliver devices across Merton, Wandsworth and Kingston to help children with remote learning. The initiative known as Keep Kids Connected, aims to prevent disruption to children s education and help them keep on top of their learning.
