The Delaware County Jail Oversight Board appointed a new interim warden to oversee the county jail this week, the first Black executive at the facility in county history. Esker Tatum, 59, was unanimously approved by the board at its meeting late Wednesday. Tatum replaces Donna Mellon, who served as the interim warden before her retirement Dec. 17.

County hires firm to oversee prison transition

Delaware County Council voted unanimously during its regular meeting Wednesday night to approve a $385,000 contract to CGL Companies to oversee transitioning the county-owned prison from private management to county control. âThis is a major milestone for the county,â said County Council Member Kevin Madden, who also chairs the Jail Oversight Board. âWe have historically thought of the county jail as part of the criminal justice system, but this transition represents a new mindset that a county jail is also an important and integral part of the county services to the community, and an investment in the health safety and vitality of our community. Thatâs a profound shift in how we thought about it.â
