Monroe County is buying 380 new pagers and changing to a digital paging system to eliminate poor coverage that has plagued county fire departments for years.
County commissioners gave the go-ahead Tuesday to the transition from the antiquated VHF paging system to a more efficient and existing MPSCS network system to provide better coverage for departments anywhere in the county.
The commissioners voted 8-0 to pay for the new pagers and begin the transition.
The move was recommended by Televate, a consulting firm that studied issues the departments were having with static and poor quality pagers, missed alerts and low volume on the dispatching announcements.
