Guest a view about human detonation and dignity that competes with other views some secular but not liberal, some religious. Its a view that is very common in places like the one where we are right now university communities. I would venture to say its the predominant view in the elite sector our our culture and prominent in europe, which has become a very secular society. It embraces ideas about liberty and the personality, about the nature of human beings about ethics that are distinctive in our own time. Its associated with socially liberal views about matters of sexuality, abortion life and death issues. Generally identity issues. Kind of the spectrum of socalled hot button morally charged issues in our own
I joke around that i started writing this book on the eisenhower administration. I spent close to a decade in trying to understand the main gear of poverty in the United States. I think of this research in this book as reflecting that are typical of cities throughout the nation. It is baltimore and it is an american story. It is not just a freak accident of nature. Its not just about baltimoreans living in poverty. It is about how our government and society interacts with impoverished people and a disproportionate number of whom happen to be africanamerican. What is the population in west baltimore and what are the demographics . Neighborhoods by conducting a research arm neighborhoods which are predominately black, where more than a third of young women have had at least one child in their teens, where income levels never surpass 10,000 to 15000 per year and where most significantly governing institutions, what i call minimal institutions are ever present. In thinking about transgender issues and familiarity with transgender individuals theres a similar pattern to what one would have observed 20 years ago for gay men or lesbians that not many people know a transgender individual, are familiar with the issues or familiar with the concerns of transgender commitment. Therefore, it seems a little strange and alien to them. And it may make people uncomfortable. One of the big shifts that weve seen thats occurred in attitudes about lesbians and gay men has resulted in part because of Popular Culture depictions of gay men and lesbians. And still when transgender people are depicted in the mass media in Popular Culture often times theyre relatively tragic figures or problem, problem individuals that dont have positive sort of presentations of trans individuals which makes it even more difficult for people to sort of identify with and feel comfortable about trans individuals.
