Galesburg home on Second Street suffers heavy fire and smoke damage

No injuries were reported from a fire that caused heavy damage to an East Second Street home Thursday night.

Firefighters battle Thursday evening blaze on Second St

No injuries were reported after firefighters battled a structure fire along Second Street this week. At around 6:39 Thursday evening, the Galesburg Fire Department responded to a structure fire call at 772 East Second St. All three stations responded with 11 firefighters on duty. Smoke was showing from the story and a half home when fire personnel arrived on the scene and Battalion Chief Donald Brackett established command while the Brooks Street station crew made entry into the home with an attack line and quickly extinguished the fire located in a bedroom closet. Emergency coverage for the city was provided after a callback was initiated for Galesburg fire personnel. Heavy fire and smoke damage to the home and contents of the dwelling were reported. The fire is currently under investigation by GFD investigators.

Firefighters battle Wednesday fire at Academy Street apartment building

Firefighters in Galesburg battled and extinguished a fire in an apartment building on South Academy Street on Wednesday evening. According to a news release, firefighters from all three stations responded to 670 South Academy at around 5:21 where a multi-unit apartment building had light smoke coming from the roof. Battalion Chief Donald Brackett assumed command and the Central Station crew made entry, extinguishing a kitchen fire. An emergency callback was initiated to provide emergency fire coverage for the rest of the city. The fire was contained to the kitchen by suppression crews and determined to be unintentionally caused by cooking. Preliminary damage estimates are approximately $20,000. No injuries were reported.
