the judge he would, quote, lunches are for new york and one of our great presidents. and that meant also representative of real people, americans, a county, in fact, manhattan, new york county, new york, new york, where 85,000 people voted for donald trump in 2020, out of 700,000. that s what donald trump had to sit through yesterday. now, keep in mind, this is a person whose entire life, in some ways, revolves around a sick and destructive desire for praise, as well as revenge against those who dare to say anything negative about him. that desire is so strong that he has an ever present aid who reportedly follows trump around with, and i m quoting here, because it s almost not believable, a wireless printer to provide him with an ongoing stream of good news from the internet. presumably, she followed him to the bodega in harlem yesterday after a long day in court, where trump s staff might have instigated these chants among the crowd. four more years!
i mean, on the first day of the trial, jason miller, the communications director for the campaign, or maybe that not his title anymore, he does something with the campaign, i m sure it s very important, and he shared a split screen of all of these different channels showing him outside the court, and, you know, with some kind of congratulatory statement about the wall-to-wall coverage, and i was just thinking, in no other universe would this be a positive development for a campaign. i have this theory, and i think it s, i don t know. it s firmly held, but may be false. i think that he thrives on negative attention. i think he s inverted people s sense of whether negative attention is good for a politician in the abstract, such that people now think it is good, even though it s not. like, that s why carrie lake didn t win in arizona, as you cover that race. you re defined by your enemies, right? there is a reason that politicians generally don t court negative attention, because
by 7 million votes in 2020. neither election was not close, to be totally honest. in off year elections, trump has displayed what vanity fair calls a losing touch, with trump endorsed candidate after candidate going down. but because of that one victory in 2016, enabled by the antidemocratic quirk of our electoral system, many people believe, and this narrative persists, that there s some small set of elites that dislike donald trump. but the real folks love him. and that perception just kind of exploded in a place where the release of real people congregate. where else can you find a cross- section of everyone registered to vote holding a drivers license or paying income tax in a particular region than in a jury room in a courthouse? this week, a manhattan criminal court, hundreds of real people reported for jury duty, as is their constitutional civic privilege and duty, where many of them were considered for the very first trial of an ex- president. a bunch of them told the court up
though, is that we ve never actually had a trial or a fact- finding. the court has to take his allegations as fact. so the idea that i actually organize it they had to take us back. did he even get hurt? i don t know. he s never produced anything to say their action was an injury. this is just about that actual legal issue. like, do we want to open the door? and there s other examples too. in 2023, the court had another case, the counterman case, which so the mayor talks about in her note, saying, wait a second, we already have court president saying this is nonsense. this other finding. it seems to me you got a real rogue circuit here that is opening a very dangerous door for peaceful protest. and remember that this case, we went to the circuit twice. we got split opinions both times. we went to the supreme court twice. this is actually the second time in the court. the first time, the supreme court said we need to ask the louisiana state supreme court if you can be sued. so w
we re like, well, that s not good. and then we come back to the supreme court, and thankfully, so the mayor s statement makes it so that it ll be very hard to apply the fifth circuit s logic in the decision they made about my case. so that is a good thing. but you seem confident at the lower court level, this is, like, basically temporary. yes. we think that sotomayor s statement is actually going to make it impossible to enforce what the circuit did. we also felt confident that we re going to actually win my case when we actually go to court, and that people should not be nervous to protested these three states. the aclu has said that they will represent people if somebody, if another officer does try to invoke the fifth circuit decision, but we are thankful that sotomayor s note actually does sort of make it really hard to apply it. we wish that it had been a more forceful, like i mean, the court should have stepped in and been like this is wildly out of line five times.
