If there is such a thing as a momentous year in trash collection, 2022 could be one. It might have to be. “We are at a crossroads in Connecticut now,” said Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Commissioner Katie Dykes, whose agency oversees solid waste management. First, the trash-to-energy plant in Hartford’s South Meadows will close.
