1850s controlled by the southern influence, strong pro slavery. What president buchanan was not counting on is steven a. Douglas, the father of the kansas territory. He believed in the concept of popular sovereignty let the will of the people be spoken. Stephen douglas was outraged by the lecompton constitution. When the lecompton constitution arrived in washington, douglas got on the floor of the senate and called the lecompton constitution a swindle and a fraud. It did not represent popular sovereignty, it did not represent the role of the people. This constitution was debated in the halls of congress. The u. S. Senate, which was controlled by southerners, did pass it. They ratified it. It got to the u. S. House, which is more northern influence, when it got to the u. S. House, it was so the debate was so rancorous, that in february of 1858, late one night while this constitution was being debated in the u. S. House of representatives, a brawl broke out. That all happens tonight on cspan2s booktv. [inaudible conversations] [inaudible conversations] hello this afternoon. Thanks for coming. Good to see you all. I think we need to know introduction. At least robert caro, i hope you read all his books and are as enamored of them as i am. We are here because we are enamored, to talk about writing. Not so much the subject matter per se, but why writing matters. We both feel, as i am sure you do, that writing matters quite a bit. How it matters is a task for the writer to come to terms with. How are you going to get people to read, turn the page, to be as enthralled with your subject as you are. If you know robert caros work, you know he is a master of the enthralled. We thought we would talk a little bit about that. I hope you saw there was recently an interview with bob in the paris review and one thing that i thought was so wonderful about it was bob talking about certain working methods was one of the things he said reminded me of walt wh
And that was the end of milling operations forever. Back in the early 19th century this was rural land out here this was Washington County. It was a separate legal jurisdiction from Washington City which is what we now think of as downtown. Florida avenue was the old boundary street, that was the Northern Boundary of Washington City and this was Washington County. Washington county was sparsely inhabited, less than 10,000 people lived out here, mostly farmers and large land holders and farmers here grew all sorts of crops, a lot of wheat and corn and rye was grown for a local use and for shipping along the east coast. Mills were very important to this Rural Economy and because you had formers that were growing grains, you had to they had to really come up with an efficient way of compacting that material for transportation to markets elsewhere. And essentially thats what the millers job was to turn a crop of harvested grain into flour and meal and pack it into barrels so that it would
Very Different Reasons better very isolating and problematic so the most vulnerable usually speak concerned and we recognize that but even those who have resources is extremely expensive if you have resources well beyond your means if you go into a Retirement Community it is not affordable for so Many Americans and that is a real stress but just dont wait until that moment to figure out how theyre in the suburban areas where there is a town center and a main street that doesnt have to be planned for but is available and then you can make up half down to the park to watch the kids so we all need to think about publicly financed and assisting the communities because there will be a lot of seniors out there looking for places to live and hopefully. I think hud could play a major role i know youre talking about some venues and i see mike in the audience who is formerly assistant secretary of policy development but looking read other departments to take the lead to make a difference like th
Another rate increase may be appropriate fairly soon. Several factors suggest that the pace of rate increases should be gradual. Including the assem tri of risks at the zero lower bound, Downside Risks from weak Global Demand and gee political events. A lower long run mutual funds rate and the apparently elevated sensitivity of conditions tomile. Uncertainly about the location of supply side constraints provides another reason for gradualism. There are potential concerns with this gradual approach, however. Its possible that Monetary Policy could push reoutly sayings too high and inflation could move to temporarily above target. In an era of anchor expectations undershooting uh employment should result in only a small and temporary increase in the inflation rate. But running the economy above its potential growth rate for a extended period could involve extended risks even if inflation does not mean meaningfully above target. A long period of low Interest Rates could lead to aggressive
