Ahead of the Memorial Holiday weekend and the start of the summer vacation season doctors are warning about the risks of being around the water for children- especially after a year of COVID-19 restrictions.
Dr. Don Plumley- director of pediatric trauma at Orlando Health says we could see a sharp increase in drownings What we re concerned about is last year being a limited travel year, limited activity year, people just aren t used to being around water, Dr. Plumley said. Kids didn t get swim lessons last summer, people didn t travel.
Dr. Plumley is promoting the ABC s of being safe around the water. A is probably the most important. It stands for adult supervision.

This week, Shawnee s Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 1317 honored its pick for Officer of the Year, Pottawatomie County Sheriff Deputy David DeWitt. He also was named runner up Officer of the Year for the State of Oklahoma.
Every year Post 1317 recognizes someone in the community by giving a public service award to a deserving firefighter, police officer, and EMT of the year.
On Tuesday evening, Post 1317 Commander James Dockemeyer and Sr. Vice Commander Don Plumley presented Dewitt with the awards as several from the Sheriff s Office were in attendance in support of their colleague.
DeWitt shared the honor given to him with the rest of the Sheriff s department.

Signing two proclamations this week, Mayor Ed Bolt designated Shawnee a Purple Heart City and named Saturday, May 1, 2021, Loyalty Day.
During the Shawnee City Commission meeting, with a gallery of residents, Bolt read the proclamations in honor of locals who have served their country, as Shawnee Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) Post 1317 Honor Guard Commander Don Plumley stood as representative to accept the public expression of gratitude.
“The City of Shawnee appreciates the sacrifices our Purple Heart recipients made in defending our freedoms and acknowledges those men and women for their courage by showing our support and honor,” Bolt said. “The citizens of Shawnee have great admiration and gratitude for the men and women who have selflessly served their country and this community in the Armed Forces.”
