The National Association of Plan Advisors welcomed Alex Assaley, AIF, as its 2020-2021 President on April 9.
Assaley is the Managing Principal and the Lead Advisor for Retirement Plans at AFS Retirement Services in Bethesda, MD. A second-generation financial advisor, he has been a plan advisor since 2005. Assaley has been named as one on NAPA’s Top Retirement Plan Advisors Under 40 since the list was launched in 2014. In 2012 he was named
Employee Benefit Adviser magazine’s Retirement Advisor of the Year and 401kWire’s Top Retirement Plan Advisor of the Year–Large Market.
Assaley has a Bachelor’s degree in economics from West Virginia University and holds FINRA Series 7, 63 and 66 securities registrations. He lives in Vienna, VA with his wife Jamie and son George.

Financial wellness was once a specialty service offered by a minority of retirement plan advisers but now it is all but necessary to win new business, according to guests at the RPA Convergence Broker Dealer Roundtable and Thinktank in December.
“I’m amazed at the number of them that have redone their pitchbook, their presentation they use for prospects,” said Taylor Hammons, head of retirement plans at Kestra Financial. “They’ve minimized or removed the slides that talk about provider due diligence.”
