Vaughn Palmer: NDP passes buck to Ottawa on key gaps in B C budget

Article content Robinson suggested the fault lay with the federal government, which omitted paid sick leave from its budget, delivered Monday “I was disappointed that the federal government chose not to do that and we’re going to encourage them to move forward on that,” she told reporters. “It is the best way to go. It is the most efficient way to go.” The buck-passing probably has to do with the undisclosed cost of paid sick leave. Plus a reluctance by politicians to pick up the tab themselves or pass the bill along to pandemic-battered employers. Another surprise in the B.C. NDP budget was funding for child care, which fell well short of the party commitment in its election platform.

Budget 2021: Recovery remains out of sight

Article content The last time I sat in the B.C. legislature listening to a finance minister deliver the budget, we were living in a very different world. Over the past year, we have watched our world change and anxiety grow due to daily uncertainty, separation from friends and loved ones, our small businesses holding on by a thread, and wondering what the future will look like. On Tuesday, as I prepared to hear Finance Minister Selina Robinson deliver the first budget of this government’s second term in office, I was waiting eagerly to hear the NDP offer a real vision and a clear plan for economic recovery that acknowledged the realities of this new world. I, like so many British Columbians, was waiting for this government to demonstrate through Budget 2021 that there was reason to hope, reason to feel a sense of relief, and reason to trust this government to lead us into a brighter future.

Selina Robinson: Health and hope, strength and resilience

Article content On April 20 our government released Budget 2021, a plan focused on protecting people’s health and livelihoods though the COVID-19 pandemic, while making investments that will support a strong recovery. Through the adversity of the last year, we have witnessed the resilience of British Columbians time-and-again as communities rose to the challenge of COVID-19. I’m humbled and inspired by the incredible sacrifice and resilience shown by people in all corners of our province. We apologize, but this video has failed to load.
