Iowa City s New Horizons Band celebrates its 25th anniversary Jean Hill, Special to the Press-Citizen © Special to the Press-Citizen The Iowa City New Horizons Band. Twenty-five years ago, in 1995, a real Music Man came to Iowa City   not to start a boy’s band with 76 trombones, but to start a band for folks 55 years and older. His name is Dr. Roy Ernst, Professor Emeritus of Music Education at the Eastman School of Music. His idea was, and is, to promote making music together as a life-long opportunity, from beginners to all levels of proficiency. He wanted to expand what he had started at Eastman in 1991. He chose to come to Iowa City to start the fourth such band, sharing what he d learned from the Eastman band, because of the strong University of Iowa Music Education program and strong support from music retailers.
