A convoy of about 50 tractors driven by fruit growers from across Belgium descended on Brussels this week to call for a greater share of the profit margins generated by the sale of apples and pears in the nation’s supermarkets.
The popular winter sales period, in which stores offer steep discounts to attract customers, has largely been disappointing in Belgium this year, retailers have reported.
Last year, €11 billion was spent online by eight million consumers in Belgium, a figure slightly higher than the €10.6 billion spent in 2020 but under 2019's figure of €11.46 billion.
