Phil Murphy signed the “Dominick Marino PFRS Enhanced Benefits for Surviving Spouses Act” into law on Jan. 7. The legislation is named for Dominick Marino, a former professional firefighter and past president of the Professional Firefighters Association of New Jersey (PFANJ), who passed away from a heart attack early last year. Marino was a North Bergen native. Financial security for surviving spouses The new law will provide financial security for members’ surviving spouses by ensuring that the accidental death benefit provided by the Police and Firemen’s Retirement System cannot be below $50,000 annually.

Phil Murphy signed into law Thursday an expanded accidental death benefit for spouses of New Jersey firefighters and police in the Police and Firemen’s Retirement System. The law guarantees widows and widowers of first responders who die in the line of duty an accidental death benefit of at least $50,000 a year. Previously, the death benefit was capped at 70% of the firefighter or police officer’s final salary.
