Houston Public Media confirmed that multiple Houston ISD campuses are not providing speech therapy, just over a month after the district slashed 21 special ed contractors. According to a spokesperson, the district is working to fill vacancies on its speech team.
It’s been just over two months since the Texas Education Agency replaced the elected board and superintendent of Houston’s public school system with hand-picked managers. As major reforms sweep the district, many parents and educators are worried about losing intergenerational connections in their public schools.
Houston ISD parents, including some who hadn’t attended previous protests, are organizing against sweeping reforms to 29 schools. State-appointed superintendent Mike Miles announced eight community meetings to discuss the changes from late June through the end of July.
