THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With demand growing, the district authorities have brought in 200 cabs, school buses in addition to ambulances to ensure timely transportation of patients under distress. There are also plans to customise 100 contract carriages and equip them medically
The demand for emergency transportation of Covid patients is increasing day by day in the district as daily cases surge exponentially prompting the authorities to mobilise cabs and even customise small contract carriages for the same. With a large majority of around 38,100 active Covid patients being in home isolation, the demand for transportation has also gone up. According to health officials, timely transportation and medical care are the key to saving lives.

Vellarada hospital made second-line treatment centre
The Rugmini (Ruckmoni) Memorial Hospital in Vellarada has been converted into a COVID second-line treatment centre (SLTC) considering the increasing number of positive cases in the district, District Collector Navjot Khosa has said.
Out of the 300 beds in this hospital, 225 will be used for the CSLTC and 50 will be set apart for patients empanelled under the Karunya Suraksha project.
Twenty five of the beds will be given to COVID-19 patients who directly reach the hospital.
The non-COVID-19 outpatient wing will function in the blocks except the COVID-19 block.

Mutant variants of the virus are spreading like wildfire in the tribal and rural areas of the district. Several families in the hamlets are left in the lurch as home isolation or room isolation is impractical for them. According to natives of tribal settlements, the local authorities and health authorities are not helping them to isolate positive cases.
