All right. Good afternoon. Good afternoon. Were at the point in the semester we have been looking at the long history of africanamericans since the civil war. Weve looked at the long struggle for what historian Hasan Jeffries called freedom rights, right . Weve been looking at this quest for economic, social, and political selfdetermination, for educational access and equity. And were looking at this long quest for the full realization of freedom and citizenship. And so were getting to the point in the semester where were talking about the Civil Rights Movement. Weve been looking at that for a couple of sessions now. And the interesting thing about teaching the Civil Rights Movement is that its perhaps the era that most americans think they know the most about, right . Weve talked a little bit about this, and well talk more about this. Just because folks think that they can quote a few sentences from Martin Luther kings speech in washington or know a little bit about rosa parks civil d
Next, we talk to reenactor is about victorian marriage expectations and civil war brothels. My name is sheryl williams. I am pro treating today at the reenactment, what it would have been like to have been a victorian prostitute. At the time of the American Civil War which was in the mid smack victorian period, there were very very few choices for women. Women were innocence supposed to be the pillar of the household. The center of the family. We are talking about middle class women. Without any means of support we had very few choices. You could be a domestic servant. You could be a laundress, or you could work in a factory. At the time of the civil war there was a spike in widowhood, meaning all of a sudden, middle class women did not have support. We saw this more in the south and in the north, because the war was fought mainly in the south. These women would become prostitutes. It was not an attractive choice. It was certainly not their first choice, but between that and starvation

Experienced slaevry firsthand before they passed away. They had created through that project that lasted only a few years, 1936 to 1939, that project created the largest repository of exslave testimony we have in the united states, winding up with over 2300 exslave interviews that are now largely Available Online at the library of congress website. Anyone who is interested can go in and use those. Scholars have used them to dramatically transform the way they write about the history of slavery and emancipation and kind of reconsider that. My book took a slightly different turn or different tact by looking at the exslave collection as its known to look at the racial politics of the 1930s and really to see what does it tell us about race and the federal government and attempts to rewrite a National Historical narrative during the kind of moment of economic crisis and kind of a nationwide crisis in terms of the sense of national identity.
