Looking for light amid the COVID-19 pandemic this holiday season
With Christmas upon us, many Wisconsinites are taking time to reflect, to be thankful for their blessings, and to look ahead to brighter days.
MILWAUKEE - Through the ups and downs we ve all endured in 2020, this holiday season is a welcome distraction. Still, it isn t the darkness many Wisconsinites are dwelling on; rather, the bright spots they ve chosen to share.
With Christmas lights strung and ornaments hung in Milwaukee s Cathedral Square Park, for a moment, a difficult year seems to disappear. But as we approach the New Year, many people are taking time to reflect.
An Unexpected Foray into Albania

Imagine walking the long tunnel to the tricked-out bunker of Albania’s former president, Enver Hoxha, who led and isolated his country from 1941 until his death in 1985. We contemplated all the human effort expended to satisfy Hoxha’s paranoia as he held his country in fear. It was unforgettable.
The “we” here are two retired Foreign Service officers who, true to our roots, remain intrepid. Together, we have more than 50 years of experience with the State Department. We bonded in the mid-1990s while working together on Belarus, another cloistered European dictatorship. Dolores was the analyst for Belarus in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research, while Maria was the desk officer.

SLEEPY EYE Charles Windschitl age 85, of Sleepy Eye, MN went to be with the Lord on December 7, 2020.
Private family services at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye will be scheduled soon.
A public Celebration of Life will be planned later due to COVID-19 concerns.
Interment will be at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Sleepy Eye Military Honors will be provided by the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard.
Arrangements are with the Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye, MN.

Chuck Pethren was born to Art and Loraine (Madsen) Pethren on December 28, 1934 in a farmhouse in Brookville Township, Redwood County. A few years later they moved to Sleepy Eye. Loraine and Art’s marriage dissolved and in 1945 Loraine was united in marriage to Clarence (Doc) Windschitl and Chuck and his sister Betty were adopted. Chuck graduated from Sleepy Eye Public High School in 1952. When Chuck was in high school he helped
