MILESTONE: Volunteers at the planting ceremony GREEN-fingered volunteers are celebrating after planting their 2,000th tree in an area of Bolton woodland. Bolton Lever Rotary Club marked the milestone by planting the tree in the wood off Stapleton Avenue, next to Astley Bridge Junior Football Club. The club began the project in 2015 and has since planted trees in several areas of the town including Captains Clough, Moss Bank Park and Doffcocker Lodge. The club s membership secretary, Pat Rothwell, said: Rotary tries to do projects for both the local and international communities. Since one of our members first found out that the Woodland Trust could provide little seeds to community groups, the tree-planting project in Bolton began.
ONE bird has been crowned king in Bolton as part of a project which has identified 10 birds to represent each of the boroughs in Greater Manchester. A survey launched by the Greater Manchester Birding City Region Project, entitled The Perfect Ten , revealed that 77 percent of respondents agreed the kingfisher should represent Bolton, with more than half having spotted the bird. The birds, which are easily recognisable with their blue backs and yellow breasts, usually live along riverbanks and can be spotted in Bolton at sites such as Moses Gate Country Park, Doffcocker Lodge and Jumbles Country Park. The aim of the project is to raise awareness of the birds while increasing civic pride, and providing a basic framework for a future Greater Manchester Ecotourism Plan.
A small minority of children are causing a nuisance in the community, police say, after a large group of children had to be cleared from a park last night. Police had to disperse a crowd of up to 50 youths from Old Station Park in Horwich last night, with three, including a 15 and 14-year-old, having to be taken home due to drinking too much alcohol. A strong warning was sent out to parents asking if they knew where their child was, saying they could be fined. A neighbourhood office said last night after dispersing the crowd: As well as spending time taking these kids home there’s quite a bit of paperwork involved for the officers. They will now submit a ‘Care Plan’ which can inform future decision making around these families but also then generates referrals to partner agencies such as children’s services.
