white house. sandra: president trump preparing to celebrate a major achievement. our next guest says the president got the bill through congress by changing the way he works with the house and senate. after nearly a year in office, donald trump appears to have his first major legislative victory in sight. how did he do it? mostly by staying out of the way says michael warren, a senior writer for the weekly standard . how did he do it? if you compare this tax cut effort from the white house to what happened during the obamacare repeal effort there is a big difference. i talked to people on capitol hill who say that during the trying to get obamacare repeal there were different voices coming from the white house, lots of negotiation as the bill was being written and that kind of muddied things and made it hard for congressional leaders to get their conferences on board. there was a big difference here. the president, i m told, was brought in at every major
felt that congressional leaders in his own party didn t do enough. there were some conversations between for instance mitch mcconnell and the president privately and it appears to me that the president seemed to realize this was the best way to get tax reform through was to let to do what mitch mcconnell wanted. let the tax writers and various committees, the two committees, one in the senate and one in the house and the house and senate leadership really take the lead on this and he seems to have done that. that s been to his benefit and obviously to the benefit of republicans in congress who are looking at a really tough mid-term next year. sandra: i think you do an important thing and service to your readers when you tie everything together at the end and say the tax bill could still fail, right? as optimistic as republicans are here, you point out passing taxes before christmas doesn t mean congress and the president are done for the year. there is still a government shutdown
