Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport, under the direction of the Program Executive Office, Submarines’ (PEO SUB) Submarine Combat and Weapons Control Program Office (PMS 425), is showing what is possible when you combine speed with technical rigor. In less than one year, Division Newport’s Undersea Warfare Combat Systems Department created and fielded a virtualized AN/BYG-1 submarine combat control system (CCS) that provides equivalent CCS functionality in one-fourth the hardware footprint of the organic CCS. Rebecca Chhim (Photo: NAVSEA) Rebecca Chhim has been promoted to director of cybersecurity for Undersea Warfare (USW) Combat System Integration for Submarines and USW Systems at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport, effective December 20. As a senior scientist and technical manager with 20 years experience working in cybersecurity, Chhim will provide continuity of technical leadership and oversight to ensure long-term stewardship of Division Newport’s technical capabilities, focusing on Cyber Undersea Warfare Engineering Thrust. “I’ll be shifting back to the tactical world, working with the fleet on cyber readiness, and influencing future architecture to ensure cyber resiliency, and early vulnerability testing,” Chhim said. “It’s a big and important effort to do early cyber testing to gain vulnerability insight and harden system architectures prior to fleet delivery, so it’s super exciting. 6 NEWPORT, R.I. Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport’s newest supervisors participated in a virtual version of NAVSEA’s Propel course hosted by Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Carderock in November. Propel, a five-day course for new first-line supervisors at all NSWC and NUWC divisions and NAVSEA headquarters, provides a basic awareness of warfare center expectations and allows each participant to reflect on their own leadership style while learning best practices from more seasoned supervisors. The curriculum is balanced between team management skills and warfare center-specific training topics and concludes with team Capstone presentations. Usually held in person at a rotating host warfare center, this latest Propel course was conducted via Microsoft Teams because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
