devlin, talk about the significance of this. this is something that is having a ripple effect that goes beyond just washington here. right. so it affects the u.s. relationship with the saudis, which is always tricky and complicated on terrorism and other fronts. it affects, you know, the sort of how we understand what happened on 9/11 because obviously, there is a lot of lingering suspicion and lingering concerns that maybe everyone who was responsible for that wasn t caught and punished, and it affects, you know, the people s trust of government. there is a long simmering concern that the government, the u.s. government has been hiding secrets from the american people about the full extent of who they know, and that s why these document releases are important and these releases will affect all of those conversations and all of those places. great reporting. great to have you on the show. thank you for joining us. devlin barrett with the
two people in 2015, puts a shadow on his intentions and his mindset at that time. so it does raise more questions, jim. certainly does. and we know those 9/11 families have lots of questions. we ll see if more document releases will get some answers for them. nic robertson, thank you very much in kabul, afghanistan. now to some brand-new cnn polling and some startling results. it finds 6 in 10 republicans and republican leaning independents think former president donald trump should be the leader of the republican party. but when asked whether he should lead the ticket in 2024, not so good for the former guy. just under half say their party would have a better chance of winning with trump off of the ticket. this is the guy the former guy who during a visit to new york city yesterdaya at a firehouse continued to lie that he won the 2020 election. let s watch. gave me great support.
polished. i don t think that should surprise anyone. i think another big takeaway from this week that we saw was the fact that there was some 20/20 presidential posture on the part of at least two members. we saw a senator try to say there was a conversation that brett kavanaugh had someone with the law firm representing the president and then you saw cory booker speaking on document releases. i think those were the two main takeaways this week and really democrats efforts to tarnish brett kavanaugh s credibility didn t go too far. what did democrats potentially miss here in coming at brett kavanaugh? i don t think they missed very much. i think the problem for democrats here is that brett kavanaugh is, in fact, an
but just negotiating document releases and fisa applications, why is it so hard? at the end of the day, this isn t very difficult, at the end of the day they are beam i.r.s.ed by they are embarrassed and they are trying to obfuscate or make it difficult for what we believe in some cases are illegal activity. that is the truth. give you an example of that. we had material provided. page and a half that was redacted for issues of national security. when we finally get the information it s paying $70,000 for a conference table. that had nothing to do with national security. it was embarrassing to them. that is a small example but it s not the important example. the more important examples are the meaningful questions how they inducted the investigation and they hide and delay and this is like hide the bunny.
found out it was ten hours of testimony and we knew fusion s princip principal s said we stand by the dossier and said they would support releasing the transcript, we realized right away that would be a really interesting transcript to read as people attack this dossier. is there anything that we should understand in terms of presidential history and just modern american history about document releases? that attend to congressional transcripts. the pentagon papers were secret defense department documents spirited out of the pentagon. the executive branch. the white house tapes from the watergate scandal were obviously created in the oval office with the president s knowledge, the question of whether congress should be able to get them is legitimate constitutional question. what about when it s a fight over releasing something of its own. those other things were
