To thine own self be Who: David Tennant playing Hamlet in 2008 Credit: Alastair Muir Tomorrow sees the opening of a major theatrical experience in London – Doctor Who: Time Fracture. Utilising 34,000 square feet of space and 42 actors, the £4 million, two-hour experience comes with a generous stash of props on loan from the BBC (Daleks, Cybermen, Weeping Angels and more). All 13 Doctors will be incarnated via video and audio pre-records (by the relevant living actors and stand-ins). From what I saw in a sneak-preview walkabout, Time Fracture should deliver a treat for dedicated Whovians and a revelation for Don’t-have-a-Cluevians. But it will also, I hope, be a consummately theatrical experience. And rightly so: to my mind, the world’s longest-running science fiction TV show is indebted not so much to genre fiction as to the works of the world’s greatest playwrights.
