interestingly, 24% of those likely republican iowa caucus goers would be less likely. it was a net positive position to take. but it doesn t resonate the way sending u.s. troops to the border does. robert gibbs, that s surprising given the large percentage of caucus goers who are evangelical. it is. my guess is the bigger numbers are the top line capture most of the vangelical members. the ones that are not all that excited about it are suburban republicans around places like des moines. i think this is, quite frankly, the tension and the fight that the republican party has had since the dobbs decision last year. it s something they are going to have to navigate. iowa passed a stronger ban than 15 weeks. it will be interesting to see whether 15 weeks is the bar for some of the most conservative candidates inside of this.
8th. really effectively at the end of summer as families are on vacation, getting ready to go back to school, which critics say they were trying to slip through, trying to have a low turnout election, but so far at least for a special election, even going into election day today before the polls opened, nearly 700,000 people across the state voted. and there has been a steady stream of voting here at this polling place in columbus, but as well as at other polling places we re told across the state. so we will see what the exact turnout is, but what today is about is writing the rules essentially for that november question. ohio becomes the latest state it put abortion rights on the ballot and deciding whether to enshrine abortion rights into the state s constitution. right now the state has an abortion ban after six weeks. right. that is of course in the wake of the landmark ruling in the dobbs decision last year. when they kicked it back to the states, as we know, the supreme cour
the wake of the supreme court ruling, that dobbs decision last year. but if he signs it on friday as she s expected to do, jake, this is happening on the same day that most of the republican presidential field of candidates with a few exceptions will be coming into iowa to speak at an evangelical organization, a presidential town hall, so certainly this injects this into the republican presidential race. and it also could potentially make some uncomfortable positions for some candidates who have not said they support a six-week ban. nikki haley and others have not been specific about the number of weeks they would support for abortion legislation. so certainly this puts the issue front and center in the iowa caucuses, jake. all right, jeff zeleny, thanks so much. with us to discuss is republican congressman will herd. thanks for joining us. you recently said if you were
fake. senator holley s fake quotes served a real focus. that viewpoint that christianity is or should be the bedrock of our country has been used to curtail rights nationwide. christian activist groups have lobbied lawmakers, judges, even supreme court justices for years to overturn roe. since they got the job done with the dobbs decision last year, 15 states across the country have banned most abortions. in ohio specifically a six-week abortion ban went into effect just hours after roe was overturned. a few months later a judge blocked that ban which means at least for now abortion remains legal there until 22 weeks of pregnancy. reproductive rights groups are unwilling to wait until the next right to abortion access to take action. instead they have mobilized shore up the right to abortion in ohio. they have proposed an amendment to the state constitution that would ensure the right for everyone to, quote, make and carry out one s own reproductive
present on campus and all of these other rulings that we ve seen and bottom line is that election dos have consequences, jon and the fact that donald trump was elected in 2016, he got to a point three supreme court justices giving a 6-3 marmingt to so-called conservatives within that high court. if it goes the other way if hillary clinton wins, then all of these decisions that you saw this week they don t happen, jon. jon: yeah. aoc went on to call this misconduct overreach and abuse of power. my high school american government teacher warren would like to school her a little bit on how the system is posed to work. precisely jon and look, here s a thing. all of these rulings this twheek drove progressives to edge of madness likely would have gone thes other way, obviously, if donald trump was not elected and let s remember also, the dobbs decision last year regarding roe v. wade and
