there s also been a lot made about the company that the united states of america keeps in terms of having the death penalty. the other nations, civil liesed nations, first world nations that still have the death penalty. those are few and far between is my understanding. that s true. one of my concerns is how do we look to the rest of the world? i got back from jackson, georgia last night, the whole city of new york hosting all of these heads of state. how do you think we look to them on the news last night when we re lecturing them on human rights and a man who had raised serious questions of reasonable doubt had been killed by the state. how do we look to the world? i want to call your attention to troy davis s final words. there was something i found a little interesting. i want to put it up on the screen. this is what he said last night around 11:08. i d like to address the macphail family, despite the situation you re in, i m not the one who
welcome back to our coverage here for the latest from georgia. we have a correspondent outside the prison in jackson, georgia. i can tell you just now that the first van of witnesses. i believe these are the media witnesses. they are coming up to the podium to talk about what the witness. let s listen to them. let s take them at the podium right now. made a statement in which he said he wanted to talk to the macphail family and said that despite the situation you are in, he was not the one who did it. he said he was not personally responsible for what happened that night, that he did not have a gun. he said to the family that he was sorry for their loss but also said that he did not take their son, father, brother. he said to them, to dig deeper into this case to find out the
rights case and we are facing an international human rights scandal on tomorrow. joining me to talk about this is diane mattwits of the action center opposed to the execution of davis and investigative crime reporter michele segown. this is the first time in four years troy davis has been scheduled for execution for folks who haven t been following this case as closely, how do we get to this point? well, 22 years ago, davis was accused of killing officer macphail. he was working off-duty and actually saw a homeless man who had been pistol whipped. when he got there that s when troy davis was, in fact, convicted of killing officer macphail at the scene and there were some casings there that also linked to a shooting that had happened just a little while prior to that. but the problem is, is that a lot of this was based off eyewitness accounts and a lot of those eyewitnesses recanted what they had testified to many years later. and so without the actual
interview with laura white earlier said, we are still trying to stop this execution here in georgia. we are not giving up. michele, i understand you actually just got off the phone with officer macphail s family. what are they saying? what do they have to say about the execution, the decision at this point? at this point they re still they re not i spoke with his mom and we spoke for about 20 minutes recently and what she said is, you know what, this is great, yesterday we finally feel like our voices were heard. what made yesterday s meeting different than any other that they ve had before, was the fact that she said that they really took their time listening to both sides. they took four hours. there was one board hearing that happened previously that only took about 30 minutes and normally when she s in the car heading back home she s back home now, that, you know, she gets that call to say you know what, we re not moving forward with this. she says although they received th
but the key thing that the board of pardon and paroles seemed to be interested in today is that they heard from one of the jurors, actually there were three jurors that have recanted and said, please don t execute troy davis. three jurors that voted him guilty? yes. but one of them who was testifying today named brenda forrest who says that she s a strong supporter of the death penalty still, especially for cop killers, but given what she now knows about the ballistic evidence, which is something that people have not focused on, there was evidence put before the jury that the bullet that killed officer macphail came from the same gun that was fired at a party reputedly by troy davis. the georgia bureau of investigation now agrees that they can no longer say that the testimony they put before the jury is reliable and accurate. and they can t say that the bullet that killed the officer
