Head Coach Brian Schmetzer is a Sounder through-and-through.
Born and raised in Seattle, Schmetzer’s connection to the Sounders spans four decades and several iterations of the club. First as a player and then a coach, few figures personify Seattle soccer quite as much as the Sounders steward.
Last week, Schmetzer sat down with
Soccer America’s Scott French to discuss his tenure in the Pacific Northwest and the lessons he’s learned throughout his career.
According to Schmetzer, his fondest early memories were attending NASL Sounders matches at Memorial Stadium with his family and getting to meet the players.

Liverpool won a treble of cups in 2000/01, lifting the League Cup and FA Cup at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, before extending their reach to Europe and landing the UEFA Cup as well.
The late, great Gerard Houllier was the man in charge, assembling a team that blended home-grown talents with players that he had brought to the club from across Europe. Such was his transformation of the squad, only one inherited player that hadn’t come through the youth ranks was left by the midway stage of the treble season - and that was fan favourite Patrik Berger.

Gerard Houllier’s passing earlier this week prompted tributes from both England and France, as former colleagues and rivals alike praised his work in French football and in the Premier League.
With Liverpool, Houllier restored a winning mentality, while he also nurtured some of the biggest names in French football during his time working with the nation’s footballing structures.
Houllier also worked with some of Africa’s top stars over the last four decades, signing some big names, and helping to advance the careers of some of the continent’s other greats.
