Radio silence: Israeli-Moroccan normalization deal causes ruckus at French-Arab station

Follow Feb. 24, 2021 PARIS – The official warming of ties between Israel and Morocco has led to a heated dispute between a radio station for the French-Maghrebi community and two presenters who wanted to discuss the normalization agreement on air. Malik Yettou and Rose Ameziane host Paris-based Beur FM’s weekly show “L’Actu Autrement” (“News with Another Perspective”), and the spat arose a few days after the normalization deal between the two countries was announced on December 10. Yettou said the Israeli Embassy in Paris contacted the pair directly, offering to discuss the agreement, after emailing the radio station about the matter but receiving no response.

A new report by a leading British anti-racism organization showed a troubling rise in antisemitic conspiracy theories surrounding the COVID-19. Ameziane hit back against the station’s claim that the act of speaking to the Israeli Ambassador was not permitted by its editorial policy. “In what way is addressing this historic agreement between the Kingdom of Morocco and Israel not part of the editorial focus of Beur FM? How did we go beyond our rights by speaking with the Israeli Ambassador to France?” she asked. She pointed out that the station’s website carries three tabs reading “Algeria,” “Morocco” and “Tunisia.”
