COLOMBO (News 1st): There is a risk of minor flood levels in the areas located above the Kalu river basin, the Department of Irrigation said on Tuesday morning (May 25).
“Minor floods could occur in the low-lying areas of the Kalu river basin located in the Divisional Secretariats of the
Ratnapura, Nivithigala, Pelmadulla, Kahawatte, and Elapatha,” Eng. S.P.C. Sugeeshwara, the Director of Irrigation (Hydrology & Disaster Management) at the Irrigation Department told News 1st.
The highest rainfall of 175.5 mm in the 24 hours that ended on Tuesday morning (May 25) was recorded from the Elton Estate area in Nawalapitiya, the Department of Meteorology said.

COLOMBO (News 1st): The island-wide travel restriction was relaxed at 4:00 AM today (May 25); the travel restriction will be re-imposed at 11:00 PM tonight (May 25) across the island.
“Once the travel restriction is relaxed, one individual from each household is expected to visit the nearest shop to purchase the food and medicines. If this is not followed, there will be no effect in the travel restriction imposed,” Army Commander General Shavendra Silva, the Head of the National Operations Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO) sternly advised the people on Tuesday (May 25).
According to the Army Commander, information has been passed through the Divisional Secretariats as to which shops can open when the travel restriction is relaxed.

COLOMBO (News 1st): Two spill gates of the Kukulegama Reservoir have been opened as a result of the heavy showers experienced in many parts of the island.
A capacity of 60 cubic metres of water is being released per second through the reservoir at present, Eng. S.P.C. Sugeeshwara, the Director of Irrigation (Hydrology & Disaster Management) at the Irrigation Department told News 1st.
Residents in the low-lying areas of the Kalu river including those residing in the Divisional Secretariats of Mathugama, Bulathsinhala, Palinda Nuwara, Milleniya, and Baduraliya MUST remain vigilant regarding rising water levels, Eng. Sugeeshwara advised the general public.

All economic centres across the country will remain closed when island-wide travel restrictions come into effect later this week, the Ministry of Agriculture announced today (May 19).
Accordingly, operations at economic centres will be halted from May 21 – May 24.
However, all economic centres as well as the Manning Market in Peliyagoda will remain open from 4.00 am 11.00 pm on May 25, the announcement read further.
The establishments will remain closed again from May 26 – May 28 while travel restrictions are in force next week.
Travel permits will be issued to allow lorries to transport vegetables and fruits to these establishments on May 24 and 25. The Agriculture Ministry has directed District secretaries and the Police to come up with an efficient measure to issue these permits to mobile vendors, wholesale traders, farmers and retailers before travel restrictions are imposed on May 21.
