The Australian Workers Union has made a dramatic intervention in Labor s Tasmanian election campaign, urging the party s national executive to overturn the preselection process, after a popular mayor was snubbed as a candidate.
Key points:
Acting national secretary for the AWU Misha Zelinsky says the party s administrative committee deliberately manipulated the process to deny Mr Winter preselection
Mr Winter has expressed views characterised by the left faction as anti-worker
The AWU has requested all existing preselection decisions be scrapped and a fairer process developed, or Mr Winter is preselected as a candidate for Franklin
Mr Winter is a member of the party s right faction and has the support of previous Labor premiers Lara Giddings, David Bartlett and Paul Lennon.
