Network Rail has been fined £696,666 for failing to protect its staff, after a fire at Godinton substation in Kent left one employee seriously injured. The rail operator pleaded guilty under the Health and Safety at Work Act, following prosecution from the Office of Road and Rail (ORR). ORR’s investigation concluded that Network Rail failed, over a significant period of time, to prevent water leaking into the building and to maintain dehumidifiers installed inside. In its investigation, the ORR found the conditions were unsafe, and that the failures led to an electrical arc and a fire in 2018 while Network Rail’s employees were working on a circuit breaker.
