A new World Bank data set shows that around the world, the number of subsidy programs aimed at spurring green technologies from solar panels to electric vehicles has been rising. China and the United States deploy the largest number of subsidy programs, followed by Australia, Canada, and the European Union.
Developing countries are most vulnerable to the trade-distorting effects of subsidies. They rely on trade to drive economic growth, reduce poverty, diversify their economies, and respond to climate change. To attract investment, they need the certainty provided by a credible and coherent system of global trade rules.
